Directions: There are two routes to Russell from Whangarei, one via State Highway 1 to Opua and across on the vehicular ferry then to Russell, or drive the scenic route via the old Russell Road winding around many bays to Russell.

Within metres of Rocky Bay which is suitable for kayaking, snorkelling and fishing, or watching the dolphins frolicking in the bay. Just 3 minutes walk will take you to a sandy beach safe for the whole family to swim. The historic township of Russell is just 2 km away with plenty of cafes and restaurants that caters for all tastes including the Duke of Marlborough Hotel on the waterfront for fine dining, Thai restaurant, Indian restaurant and many others to suit your tastes and budget. Historical features include the Christ church the first church built in New Zealand, Pompallier Mission and printing works that survived the sacking of the township in 1845 by Hone Heke. Also on the hill is the flagstaff that was chopped down by Hone Heke with a panoramic view of the Bay of Islands.
