In Maori legend, the North Island of New Zealand was an enormous fish, caught by the adventurer Maui. For this reason, Northland is sometimes known as "The tail of the fish", Te Hiku o Te Ika. Northland Maori claim that Kupe made landfall at the Hokianga (although others claim this was at Taipa) in Northland.
If the Maori regard the region as the birthplace of the country, there can be no doubt that it was the European starting-point for modern New Zealand. Traders, whalers and sealers were among the first arrivals, and the gum and timber of the mighty kauri trees brought the early colonisers.

The beachfront is a 2–3-minute drive, or 10-minute walk and sheltered from large ocean swells by several outlying islands. At one end of the Bay is rugged coastline leading you around rocks to the mermaid pool, or might like to access the pool by using the walking track at the top of Rapata Rd. Ohawini is over the hill with access to the Bay via the beach at half to low tide. Take a picnic to the beach or enjoy takeaways from Skips Fish N Chips on the waterfront. There are lots of rock pools to explore, magnificent Pohutukawa trees to picnic under or just to seek shade. The Bay has a local store providing groceries, fuel, and dive bottles.
Oakura
We are located on the corner of Russell Rd and Oakura Rd Northland.
Tui Lodge B&B offers 3 spacious bedrooms perfect for couples and/or single travellers for short or long stays. For each booking the Lodge is closed to all other bookings so guest(s) have complete privacy without sharing with strangers.
Our Fantail bedroom has an extra wide doorway for easy wheelchair access, and a wheelchair friendly wetroom bathroom.
