Out on the Peninsular you will be captivated by the Royal Albatross colony. There are marvellous penguin watching opportunities too.

Inland, you could try cycling the Central Otago Rail Trail or take the stunning backcountry trip via Dansey’s Pass and Naseby. This is rugged pioneer gold mining country steeped in history with spectacular scenery to entrance you.

The elegant town of Oamaru features some of New Zealand’s best examples of 19th centurary architecture. Oamaru is also renowned for its penguin colonies and was the town in which the author Jant Frame grew up. Oamaru is almost certainly the town of "Waimaru" in her writings.

There is plenty of activities to keep you busy while you are staying with us. Naseby is a great place for walks through the forest mountain biking the international curling rink. The Maniototo also has great fishing with the Taieri river running through the hart of it, which has fantastic fly fishing.

A soak in the hot tub after a leisurely dinner in the village and the relaxation sets in well and truly. The mature fruit trees in the grounds, relics from Molyneaux Orchard, provide the preserves and jams served for breakfast at Hartley Homestead and the Pinot Noir vines at the rear of the property are in full production.
Euan has managed to renovate sympathetically, retaining the integrity of the building and providing the creature comforts guests expect which has gained them a 4 star Qualmark and Silver Enviro award.
There are two beautifully appointed bedrooms with guest lounge in the homestead and a very private super-king bed unit in the grounds.
Clyde is fast becoming a destination in its own right, it is the perfect place to spend at least a couple of nights either at the beginning or at the completion of the Otago Central Rail Trail and its proximity to wineries and ski fields makes it a perfect base summer or winter.

The farmhouse has been cheerfully modernized, has 5 double bedrooms (2 have an extra single bed), 2 bathrooms and a large electric sauna. The water supply is treated and a solar power system provides some of the energy. There are open fires .

On 10acres we farm 5 milking sheep and their progeny, make cheeses, grow vegetables , chickens, ducks, peacocks and bees and create superb home-produce dinners for most guests (they must be pre-ordered) and deliver them to you.

The house is full of artworks, paintings and printed fabrics, made here and inspired by this local environment.

Gumtree Farmstay runs beef cattle and a small flock of sheep all year round, as well as rearing calves and orphaned lambs during the months of August to October.

We offer 2 types of accommodation.

ARDGOWAN ROOM is hosted accommodation within our house. The bedroom has a comfy king size bed (which can become 2 single beds) and separate bathroom and toilet which guests have exclusive access to during their stay. The ARDGOWAN ROOM can accommodate 2 adults and includes a continental breakfast and Farm Tour at 4pm.

THE SHEPHERD'S REST is a self-contained shepherd's hut and separate from our house. It has a queen bed, kitchenette, composting toilet and shower. There is NO WIFI. Unwind in the outdoor bathtub. Relax in the Cape Cod chairs, enjoy the views and star gaze at night. Feed our 4 quirky alpaca boys. There are board games to keep you entertained and fairy lights for some extra magic. THE SHEPHERDS REST is suitable for up to 2 adults.

Neither of our accommodation options are suitable for children and both have a maximum capacity of 2 people. SMOKING is PROHIBITED and NO PETS ALLOWED.

Our farm is a short drive to Oamaru which has many restaurants.
We are the perfect base for sightseeing in and around historic Oamaru. Highlights of Oamaru include blue and yellow-eyed penguins, the Victorian Precinct and its array of artists and craftspeople, Moeraki Boulders and Elephant Rocks.

The cottage was originally built from former army huts so is quirky and unusual, it has been updated and is completely double glazed. It is warm and cosy with t.v Wifi, Netflix, games and videos.
Facilities include: Continental Breakfast. Kitchen with microwave, toaster, stove and fridge/freezer. Lounge. Shower room and separate toilet. Bike storage and ebike charging point. Large garden with ample seating
In addition The cottage also boasts an historic 2 cell jail (lockup) circa 1863 -1947 which is located at the side of the property and has recently been lovingly restored by the current owners Mark and Chris Ford.

Choose to stay in our Schist stone cottage or the farm house. Both rooms have very comfortable queen beds and an ensuite in each. We also have an option of a twin room you would share the bathroom with the farm house guest in this option. This works well in a family/group situation. You will enjoy a satisfying tasty continental breakfast.

Facilities include:
-Country garden to enjoy
-Our dog Ritchie a black Labrador who loves playing fetch.
-Lawn croquet to play.
-Board games
-We can arrange a tasty in house meal provided from one of our local cafes (we need 5 days notice for this.)
-Transport can be arranged to eat out at one of the local eateries, if needed.

We are here to help, but also respect your privacy
If you are here to bike some, or maybe all of our famous Otago Rail Trail we are a great place to stay to start or end your journey . We are keen bikers ourselves and thoroughly recommend this great bike ride.

Other activities we recommend include a walk to Sutton Salt Lake ( the only inland salt lake in New Zealand) through beautiful schist rock landscape ( 40 minutes round trip), or our famous Rock 'n'Pillar range is a great hike to the top if you have had a bit of tamping experience- weather permitting of course. Our Midddlemarch museum is always worth a visit plus we have a local swimming pool for those hotter summer days.
We are only an hours drive away from Dunedin and 45mins to the airport which is a spectacular drive on State Highway 87
