About Southland, New Zealand

There’s more to Southland than most people imagine. For a start there’s the stunning Catlins Conservation Park with a huge variety of walks to explore. See the Niagra Falls of New Zealand and a genuine fossil forest.

Seafood aficionados should make the pilgrimage to Bluff in the oyster season. You can’t get them fresher or better than this!

Visit the Southland Museum & Art Gallery where the Tuatara has been successfully bred. Keep an eye out for grumpy Henry who at 110 years old became a first time Dad!

And don’t miss the opportunity for a visit to Stewart Island. People have been known to go for a day and stay for a lifetime! This is nature at its best and living as it was. Oh, and if you can catch a bigger blue cod anywhere else, tell us about it!

Stewart Island is also home to New Zealand’s newest National Park and Great Walk – the Rakiura National Park and Rakiura Track.

Five Rivers Retreat provides amazing accommodation set on a genuine working farm in Northern Southland. We farm sheep, deer and cattle on the property. Roger also has a team of working dogs and Ruby has several pet sheep that love meeting guests.

The area is well known for its farming but also for the many great fly-fishing rivers where big browns can be caught. We have local fishing guides, so let us know if you want to experience a day on the river and we can help organise this for you.

Five Rivers Retreat offers you the choice of a Bed & Breakfast stay or a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast stay. Our two guest rooms are individually designed and decorated and both have their own ensuite and private entrance. Our rooms both have king size beds and our ensuites have both a shower and a bath in them, along with heated towel rails and tiled heated flooring.

We have a guest living room where you can settle in and make yourselves at home in front of the large open fire. Our living room has a selection of books for you to browse through, showcasing our New Zealand scenery. We have a wireless internet connection through out the house that guests are free to use at their leisure. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities.

Do come and enjoy some great southern hospitality, at the same time experience life on a real farm, great accommodation and amazing scenery.
