About Southland, New Zealand

There’s more to Southland than most people imagine. For a start there’s the stunning Catlins Conservation Park with a huge variety of walks to explore. See the Niagra Falls of New Zealand and a genuine fossil forest.

Seafood aficionados should make the pilgrimage to Bluff in the oyster season. You can’t get them fresher or better than this!

Visit the Southland Museum & Art Gallery where the Tuatara has been successfully bred. Keep an eye out for grumpy Henry who at 110 years old became a first time Dad!

And don’t miss the opportunity for a visit to Stewart Island. People have been known to go for a day and stay for a lifetime! This is nature at its best and living as it was. Oh, and if you can catch a bigger blue cod anywhere else, tell us about it!

Stewart Island is also home to New Zealand’s newest National Park and Great Walk – the Rakiura National Park and Rakiura Track.

Since it is rural, you can expect muddy roads when wet.

Take your time and when all done wind down in the cottage attached to the homestead. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven. Or spoil yourself and dine out in Kaka Point at the Point or in Owaka at Lumberjack. The beds are high quality and firm with all natural sheets like cotton and linen. The modern tiled bathroom is all yours and has great pressured water that doesn't contain chlorine. Guy and Ella are from The Netherlands and came to New Zealand in 2002. They are completely integrated and talk both Dutch and English fluently. The dairy farm in Benhar near Balclutha is run by their son Simon and "The Cloan" property as run-off farm with young stock, between Romahapa and Kaka Point. Guy is pretty busy working on both farms and keeping the cows happy and Ella assists where needed.
There is a fireplace to keep you toasty warm if needed. They love to see their guests enjoy their stay and answer any questions you may have.
